Tips for Moving in Philadelphia

GGPM’s step by step guide to having a smooth moving experience:

  1. Purchase moving boxes, box labels, furniture wrap, and mattress covers if desired (recommended). All these items can be purchased at most Uhaul, Penske, or general self storage rental centers. Used boxes are often given away free on Craigslist in the free section, search for “moving boxes”. We provide moving blankets, rope, straps, dollies, and manual tools.
  2. Remove drawers from dressers, put clothing in bags/bins/boxes, and disassemble any furniture that you are able to. If a piece of furniture requires a special tool to disassemble or will require hoisting, please alert us 3 days prior to the move date.
  3. Go Go Philly Movers now offers a packing service. Get two professional packers for just $50/hr, 1 hr minimum, prorated to nearest 15 minutes.
  4. Reserve a parking space for the moving van in front of your house 3 days prior to your move by contacting the Philadelphia Streets Department’s Traffic Division at 215-686-5525
  5. Try to make a reservation with our company 2 weeks in advance. We will do our best to be last minute movers, but can’t always guarantee that we will have an open slot for that day.
  6. Occasionally a job may run late and we will not be able to make it to your move out location at the exact time you’ve requested, so please budget up to an hour after the scheduled time for the movers to arrive. We will do our best to keep you abreast as to any postponements.
  7. Order the correct size truck. The basic movers rate of $75/hr for two men includes a 12’ cargo van (12’ x 5’ x 4’ cargo capacity). This is usually the best deal for most local moves, but if you are doing a long distance move, you may want to choose a larger truck to avoid multiple trips.
  8. Avoid Philadelphia rush hour! The move will go faster during off peak traffic time. Philadelphia traffic can be a nightmare (especially when Septa is striking!).
  9. Be wary of sketchy moving companies. There are many bargain movers out there that conduct their business unprofessionally or even criminally. Check out objective reviews of our moving company on Google Maps, Yelp, and our Facebook group. We’d be happy to provide you with numerous happy references if you’d like to speak with them directly.
  10. If you feel like the movers have worked hard and effectively for you, tips are very much appreciated. The physical toll of moving often prevents movers from working as many hours per week as other forms of employment, so tips represent a substantial portion of their income. Similar to tipping a server, a 15 to 30% tip is standard practice in this industry.
  11. Be prepared to have a great move if you hire Go Go Philly Movers!
